From a full classroom to a country-wide platform

An established, profitable coaching institute had one ceiling it could not raise: the size of its classroom. Twelve months later, its teaching runs on web, Android and iOS.

01 โ€” Founder Perspective

In the founder's words.

Draft โ€” pending founder approval
"

We had built something that worked โ€” full classes, real results, a profitable business. But all of it depended on a student being able to physically reach us.

First500days did not ask us to change what we teach. They gave the teaching a way to travel: a strategy for entering the online market, the product to deliver it on, the team to run it, and the marketing to take it out.

Today a student anywhere in the country can sit in my class. That is the difference.

Arun Dixit ยท Founder & Director, Paraclasses
02 โ€” Executive Summary

A business that already worked, taken out of one building.

Paraclasses is a Faridabad coaching institute built around Arun Dixit's chemistry teaching for JEE, NEET and board students. By the time First500days was engaged it was not a startup: classes were running, students were enrolled, and the business was profitable and scaling.

What it did not have was a way out of its own building. Every student had to be within travelling distance of a physical classroom, which capped the business at the size of the room โ€” no matter how good the teaching inside it was. There was no digital strategy, no technology product, no digital team and no online acquisition plan.

First500days took on the digital half of the business: the strategy for entering the online market, the product to deliver teaching through, the team to operate it, and the go-to-market to bring students in. In six months the platform was built โ€” a student app across web, Android and iOS, plus an admin panel to run it from.

Paraclasses remains a profitable business, now with a national delivery channel running alongside its classrooms.

03 โ€” The Venture

Good teaching does not scale. A platform does.

Coaching is a proximity business. A student enrols because the institute is reachable, and the institute grows until the room is full โ€” after which the only ways up are more rooms, more cities or higher fees. Reputation, meanwhile, travels much further than the business can follow.

Paraclasses had that reputation. Arun Dixit's chemistry teaching, an AIR 11 in CSIR NET-JRF, and a track record with JEE and NEET students had built a brand its market knew. What the brand lacked was a way to deliver on itself without requiring the student to be in Faridabad.

The digital platform is that delivery mechanism: the same mentor, the same curriculum, the same test discipline โ€” reaching a phone anywhere in the country.

The hybrid proposition โ€” small batches, doubt classes, a daily test series and study material, now delivered both in the room and on the platform.
04 โ€” Where They Started

Half the business already existed.

This is not the usual case-study starting line. Paraclasses was not an idea โ€” it was a working, profitable institute with students in seats. The gap was on one side only, and that is precisely what made it worth closing.

When the teaching is already proven and the customers already exist, the digital gap stops being a risk and becomes the cheapest growth available to the business. It simply has to be built.

05 โ€” The Challenge & Our Response

Four gaps between a full classroom and a national platform.

Going online is rarely one problem. For an institute that has only ever taught in a room, it is four at once โ€” and a product without the other three is just a video library.

01

Business strategy

The challenge

The institute knew its teaching worked offline, but had no strategy for entering the online market โ€” a different business with different economics, not simply the same classes on video.

What we did

We understood the business and the founder's intent first, then set the digital path: enter the online market by building an owned product and an online brand, rather than renting reach on someone else's platform.

02

Product

The challenge

There was no technology product of any kind. Without one, "going online" could not mean anything more durable than uploading videos to a platform someone else owned.

What we did

We built the complete digital product: a student app across web, Android and iOS, and an admin panel to run courses, content, tests and students from โ€” so the institute could teach nationwide from its own platform.

03

Team

The challenge

The institute was staffed to teach, not to run a digital business. None of the roles an operating platform needs existed inside it.

What we did

We helped build the digital team โ€” the people who would operate the platform and the online side of the business once it was live, rather than leaving a product without anyone to run it.

04

Go-to-market

The challenge

A national platform with no national awareness reaches no one. The brand was strong in its own market and unknown outside it.

What we did

We defined the brand-building and performance-marketing strategy to take the platform beyond its home market and put it in front of students who had never heard of a Faridabad classroom.

06 โ€” The Venture-Building Journey

Twelve months: strategy, six months of build, then a business around it.

  1. Phase 1

Understand the business, then set the path

Before anything was designed, the work was to understand what Paraclasses actually is and what the founder wanted from the online market. The strategy that came out of it was specific: build an owned product and an online brand, rather than distribute someone else's.

  2. Phase 2 ยท 6 months

    Build the platform

The full product was developed: a student app across web, Android and iOS, and an admin panel behind it. Building all three student platforms rather than one meant the institute was not choosing which students it could reach.

  3. Phase 3

    Build the digital team

A platform with no one to operate it decays. The digital team was assembled to run content, courses, tests and students on an ongoing basis.

  4. Phase 4

    Take it to market

Brand development and performance marketing carried the platform beyond the institute's home city โ€” the point at which a local coaching business starts behaving like a national one.

  5. Phase 5

    Operating

Paraclasses runs today as a profitable business with both channels live: classrooms in Faridabad and a platform available anywhere.

07 โ€” What We Built

One product, four applications.

Web App

The student platform in the browser โ€” dashboard, courses, live classes and mock tests.

Android App

The same platform on the device most Indian students actually study on.

iOS App

Full parity on iPhone, so reach is never limited by a student's handset.

Admin Panel

Where the institute runs courses, content, batches, tests and students from one place.

Inside those applications sits the machinery a coaching institute actually runs on: course libraries broken into lectures with study material and quizzes, a daily mock-test engine, live classes, attendance, progress tracking and a wallet and checkout for enrolment.

08 โ€” Go-to-Market

The mentor was the message.

Online coaching is a crowded market with very large players in it. Paraclasses did not need to out-spend them โ€” it needed the thing they cannot copy: a named teacher with a rank and a record behind him.

Workstream 01

Brand development

Building the online brand around the teaching itself โ€” the mentor, the method and the results โ€” so the platform arrived with a reason to be trusted.

Workstream 02

Performance marketing

The acquisition strategy for reaching students beyond the institute's home market, where the classroom brand carried no weight.

Paraclasses is a profitable business โ€” and it was one before this engagement began. None of that profitability is claimed as an outcome here. What changed is the ceiling: a business that could only teach the students who could reach Faridabad now has a delivery channel with no geographic limit, a team to run it and a brand strategy to fill it.

No student numbers, online enrolments or digital-channel revenue are claimed on this page. The outcome of this engagement is the capability โ€” the strategy, the platform, the team and the route to market โ€” not a traction figure.

11 โ€” The Lesson

What this proves for a business that already works.

Paraclasses did not arrive broken. It arrived profitable, full and well regarded โ€” and that is exactly why the digital gap was worth closing rather than tolerating.

01

Build it before you need it

Most businesses go digital in a crisis, when the money and the patience have already run out. Paraclasses did it from strength โ€” which meant the platform launched behind an existing reputation instead of trying to manufacture one from scratch.

02

Own the channel

Uploading to somebody else's platform rents you an audience you never own. Building the product meant the relationship with the student, the content and the data all stay with the institute.

03

The product is half the job

Building the apps took six of the twelve months. The other six went on strategy, team and go-to-market โ€” the parts that decide whether anyone ever opens what you built.

Teaching is the hard part, and they had already solved it. Everything after that is distribution. Not every business starts at zero โ€” but every business meets the limit of what it can reach. What you build next decides where that limit sits.
